Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to remove unwanted hair from various parts of the body, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and other areas. It is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair but can be successfully used on all skin types. It works by using concentrated light to target and destroy hair follicles, resulting in a significant reduction in hair growth. Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed for initial hair removal, and maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

Why choose laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to remove unwanted hair from various parts of the body, including the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, and other areas. It works by using concentrated light to target and destroy hair follicles, resulting in a significant reduction in hair growth. The primary reasons people opt for laser hair removal are the long lasting results, the precision targeting of dark, coarse hairs, the speed of the procedure, and the end results.

Risks

While laser hair removal is generally safe, it does come with potential risks and side effects. These can vary depending on the individual, skin type, and hair type. Common risks include:

  • Skin Irritation: Temporary discomfort, redness, and swelling are possible after the procedure. These symptoms usually subside within a few hours.
  • Pigment Changes: The treated area might experience temporary or permanent changes in skin color, especially in people with darker skin tones.

Rarely, laser hair removal can cause blistering, crusting, scarring or other changes in skin texture. Other rare side effects include graying of treated hair or excessive hair growth around treated areas, particularly on darker skin.

Laser hair removal isn’t recommended for eyelids, eyebrows or surrounding areas, due to the possibility of severe eye injury.

How to prepare

Proper preparation is essential for effective laser hair removal and to minimize risks. Here are some steps to follow:

  • Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid sun exposure for at least six weeks before and after treatment. Tanned skin can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Avoid Hair Removal Methods: Refrain from plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for at least six weeks before treatment. These methods can disturb the hair follicle, which is the target of the laser.
  • Shave the Treatment Area: Shave the area to be treated a day before the procedure. This removes the hair above the skin that can be burned by the laser, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.
  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications: Discuss any medications you are taking with your provider, as certain medications can increase the risk of bleeding or bruising during the procedure.
  • Consultation: Have a thorough consultation with your provider to discuss your medical history, skin type, and hair type. This helps determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

What to expect

During the procedure you will be given protective eyewear to shield you eyes from the laser light. Your provider will apply a cooling gel or use a special cooling device to protect your skin and minimize discomfort.  The laser device will be adjusted according to your hair color, thickness, and the location of the treatment area. It will be pressed to your skin and the laser light will be activated. The light will penetrate the hair follicles, inhibiting future hair growth.  You may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin or a slight warmth during the procedure. Treating a small area such as the upper lip might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back or full legs may take up to an hour.

After the procedure you may experience redness and swelling for the first few hours.  To reduce discomfort from this you may apply ice, or an anti-inflammatory cream. Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum at least SPF 30 sunscreen daily.  Don’t use a tanning bed for six weeks or as directed by your doctor.

Results

Laser hair removal typically requires multiple sessions, usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. Hairs do not fall out immediately, but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks. This may look like continued hair growth. The repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.

The number of treatments required varies depending on the area treated, hair thickness, and individual response to the treatment.

Most people experience hair removal that lasts several months, and it might last for years. But laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. When hair regrows, it’s usually finer and lighter in color.

You might need maintenance laser treatments for long-term hair reduction.
